Chapter 7
A week had passed since the accident and the shooting, but I was on guard all the time. I spent every night with her in my arms and all day walking the perimeter. My brother came out of the hospital four days after the shooting, but I didn’t tell him about April. I didn’t want him to get on me because I didn’t have it in me to fight about her. He didn’t trust her, but I did. She had my heart. I hadn’t told her I loved her, but I would soon.
I’d spent the night in her arms, and it was one hell of an experience. I craved it and knew that that’s the way it was going to be for the rest of our lives.
She woke up before me because she had to get to the Estate before I did, but I got up five minutes later and went to make the coffee while she showered. There was a knock at the door then a FedEx envelope slid through the space at the bottom. I picked it up and looked at the name. It was addressed to me. Strange, the only one who really knew I was here was Mr. Blake.
I pulled the tab on the envelope and pulled out a small packet of papers. On the top was a copied page of a yearbook with a picture circled in red. I looked at the image I was obviously directed to see. It was my April, but her last name was different. It was April McCorry. Also circled was the heading on the page. It read: Kennedy High School.
I started to look at the other documents. She ran away from her home in Chicago, and her family had been frantic with worry for her. Rewards were already at a hundred thousand dollars. There was nothing else besides that in the file, but it was more than enough for me. She had lied to me. She’d broken my trust. She was just eighteen now. I had to leave before she got out of the shower. At that point, I didn’t know what I’d do to her. Penning her a quick note and leaving the file on her kitchen table, I rushed out as fast as I could to my car and sped away.
I tried to avoid thinking of her as I drove back to the Blake Estate, but it was hard. She had several opportunities to be upfront with me. She gained my trust, something I didn’t give lightly, only to deceive me. The rage running through me almost forced me off the road and into a nearby ditch. Suddenly, I was glad I didn’t tell anyone about her. She duped me and the feeling was brutal. It was like I was in that hospital bed all over again.
“Hey, Eddie, I’ve got a bad feeling about this bust,” I said as we drove in our usual black FBI truck in the middle of a dark and quiet night.
“Milo, I’m with you, so how could anything go wrong? I’ve got your back,” Markham said.
